a) Cloudflare
Our website uses the services of Cloudflare Inc. (USA) for the secure and encrypted transmission of data on the Internet (SSL), to improve the performance of the website worldwide through the Cloudflare content delivery network (CDN), and to improve security and protection against hacker attacks through the Cloudflare web application firewall (WAF). Cloudflare may use its own cookies to provide these services. A corresponding contract in accordance with the GDPR for commissioned data processing is in place with Cloudflare. You will find more detailed information on the GDPR and Cloudflare on Cloudflare's GDPR pages: www.cloudflare.com/gdpr/introduction/
What is Cloudflare?
A content delivery network (CDN), such as the one offered by Cloudflare, is nothing more than a network of servers connected via the Internet. Cloudflare has distributed these servers all over the world so that websites reach your screen faster. Put simply, Cloudflare makes copies of our website and places them on its own servers. When you now visit our website, a load-balancing system ensures that most of our website is delivered from the server that can display our website the fastest. The distance of the data transfer to your browser is considerably shortened thanks to a CDN. Thus, the content of our website is delivered to you by Cloudflare not only from our hosting server, but from servers all over the world. The use of Cloudflare is particularly useful for users abroad, because in that case the page can be delivered from a nearby server. In addition to the fast delivery of websites, Cloudflare also offers various security services, such as DDoS protection or the Web Application Firewall.
Why do we use Cloudflare on our website?
Of course, we want to offer you the best possible service with our website. Cloudflare helps us to make our website faster and more secure. Cloudflare offers us web optimisations as well as security services such as DDoS protection and a web firewall. This includes a reverse proxy and the content delivery network (CDN). Cloudflare blocks threats and limits abusive bots and crawlers that waste our bandwidth and server resources. By storing our website in local data centres and blocking spam software, Cloudflare enables us to reduce our bandwidth usage by approximately 60%. Delivering content from a nearby data centre and certain web optimisations carried out there reduce the average loading time of a website by approximately half. According to Cloudflare, the "I'm Under Attack Mode" setting can be used to mitigate new attacks by displaying a JavaScript computation task that must be solved before a user can access a web page. Overall, this makes our website much more powerful and less susceptible to spam or other attacks.
What data does Cloudflare store?
Cloudflare generally only forwards data that is controlled by website operators. The content is therefore not determined by Cloudflare, but always by the website operator itself. In addition, Cloudflare may collect certain information about the use of our website and process data that we send to it or in respect of which Cloudflare has received the relevant instructions. In most cases, Cloudflare receives data such as contact information, IP addresses, security fingerprints, DNS protocol data and website performance data derived from browser activity. For example, log data helps Cloudflare to detect new threats. In this way, Cloudflare can guarantee a high level of security protection for our website. Cloudflare processes this data within the framework of its services in accordance with applicable legislation. This naturally includes the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
For security reasons, Cloudflare may use technical cookies to distinguish legitimate traffic from automated traffic (bots). These cookies are not used for tracking or advertising purposes and are necessary for Cloudflare's security functions.
Cloudflare also works with third-party providers. These may only process personal data under Cloudflare's instructions and in accordance with the privacy policy and other confidentiality and security measures. Cloudflare will not disclose any personal data without our explicit consent.
For how long and where is the data stored?
Cloudflare stores your information primarily in the USA and in the European Economic Area. Cloudflare may transmit and access the information described above from anywhere in the world. In general, Cloudflare stores user-level data for domains on the Free, Pro and Business versions for less than 24 hours.
How can I delete my data or prevent it from being stored?
Cloudflare retains data logs only for as long as necessary and, in most cases, deletes them within 24 hours. In order to provide its services, Cloudflare processes visitors' IP addresses. You can read Cloudflare's privacy policy at www.cloudflare.com/privacypolicy.
Cloudflare will state in its privacy policy that they are not responsible for the content they receive. For example, if you ask Cloudflare whether they can update or delete your content, Cloudflare always refers you to us as the website operator. You can also completely prevent Cloudflare from collecting and processing your data by disabling the execution of script code in your browser or by adding a script blocker to your browser.
Cloudflare participates in the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, which governs the secure transfer of personal data to the United States. You can find more information at www.dataprivacyframework.gov.
